Situated 100 km north from Samaná Bay in the Dominican coasts, the Banco de la Plata Marine Mammals Sanctuary owes its name to the great number of Spaniard vessels loaded with gold and silver that sank on the XVIII century. During their annual migration, humpback whales get to this area to breed. Despite the fact this is a Sanctuary, local fisherman still fish the area equiped with spearguns and hookas.
